A column defines many properties an article will have. You can edit these at any time from story cataloging or the column manager. Here we examine some of the elements available under column definition. The top portion of the page contains the required fields needed to define a column: file name, column ID, what section it usually runs in, and the default template it should use. The remaining fields are optional. Some of them are preferences, and others relate to defaults. Values can be entered for headline, subheadline, author, artist, summary and summary options. The next section allows you to assign keywords, story types, search options, and default image handling. The last section provides entry for meta-keywords and meta-descriptions to aid in external search indexing of the site. User-defined fields (not shown) can also be added to include information specific to your publication. Notice that you may also add and define new sections, templates, and story types. This is a powerful screen that provides many levels and options for you to define a column to its fullest potential. Printed and online documentation define each field in great depth, as well as provide examples of optimizing your fields, and the advantages to setting certain defaults.
